LETTER: Minor details mean a lot

Some of us who live in Eastbourne visit the pier frequently and watch with interest the progress of repairs and redecoration. It is good to see the whiteness of the newly-painted areas, and also the picnic tables on the decking.

However, what are the first impressions of visitors to the pier? What do they see at the entrance? ‘Lions Pier’ , two torn-to-shreds Union Jacks (to our shame, not our pride) and a clock face without any hands. These may be minor details, but mean a lot to us Brits, and would not be expensive.

Walking further along the pier one cannot fail to notice two massive opulent chandeliers in the tea room, as well as smaller ones adorning the walls. These appear very extravagant, to say the least, and must have cost a lot! Were they priorities?
