Appeal for new Eastbourne lifeboat boss

An appeal has been launched to find a new lifeboat operations manager as current volunteer Paul Metcalfe approaches retirement after years of outstanding service in the role.

The RNLI at Eastbourne is calling for a volunteer to oversee the day to day operational management of the Lifeboat Station, supporting personnel, authorising launches and ensuring the lifeboats and crews are kept in a constant state of readiness.

Colin McKee, chairman of the Lifeboat Management Group said, “We are looking for a volunteer to lead a volunteer operations team which supports all elements of lifeboat operations.

“He or she will support the full time station coxswain and be on a roster alongside other volunteers to approve the launch of the lifeboats when required.”

The ideal applicant will be an enthusiastic team supporter, a good communicator and would demonstrate clear leadership abilities. Local maritime knowledge is desirable, as is basic computer use. Knowledge of the RNLI is not essential, but would be an advantage.

Assistance with administration, supporting the wider fundraising and engagement team and encouraging good working relationships with other RNLI volunteers is also involved.

Colin said, “Eastbourne Lifeboat Station has a proud 193 year history during which time crew members have received numerous medals for gallantry.

“This is a rare opportunity for someone who would like to contribute to their local community and work with others to save lives at sea within an enthusiastic and dedicated group of volunteers. You must live or work within three miles of the station and be between 17 and 70 years of age.

“The RNLI provides fantastic training to turn ordinary people into lifesavers and by volunteering; people will gain great experience, knowledge and skills.
