Westfield sign former Saint

WESTFIELD have topped up their squad ahead of the coming Sussex Division Two campaign with the signing of former St Leonards youngster Ricky Matthews.

The 19-year-old barely missed a game for the Saints during the second half of their ill-fated 2002-03 Dr Martens League Eastern Division campaign.

He played no senior football last season but will provide natural width on the left side, a commodity which the club has lacked since the departure of Steve Ringwood to Hastings United last summer.

Matthews figured as a second half substitute in the encouraging single goal friendly victory at Kent Premier League outfit Hythe Town on Tuesday night, in which Chris Smith was on target with a quick free kick just before half time. Goalkeeper Peter Newstead also repelled a penalty with the game scoreless.

That result made up for the disappointment of losing 2-1 away to East Sussex League champions Hollington United on Saturday, their strike coming in the form of an own goal. The reserves drew 3-3 with the same opponents and among the scorers was Newstead who helped out in midfield. James Carman bagged the other two.

Both teams entertain Sussex Division One neighbours Sidley United on Saturday August 7. The firsts kick-off at 2pm with the reserves following at 4.30pm.

The front side have also added a last minute friendly at newly-promoted Sussex Division One club Worthing United on Tuesday evening, kick-off 7.45pm.

They commence their league campaign at home to Shoreham next Saturday.
