Hassocks' Brennan ready for Mitas British Youth Championship

They are Tom Brennan, from Hassocks, in the 500cc class and Nathan Ablitt, from Battle, in the 150cc support class.

After six rounds have been completed and two rounds to go, the 500cc conclusion is not for the faint hearted.

The 500cc class is a straight race for the title between the two riders who have been vying for the top spot all year - Tom Brennan, who has recently made his National League debut for the Eastbourne IT First Eagles, and Kyle Bickley who comes from Workington.

Current third-place rider Jordan Jenkins has an outside chance of sneaking the title if he was to win the last two rounds.

The championship is run over eight rounds with each rider being able to drop one round.

With Bickley and Brennan dropping their worst round to date, Bickley is leading the championship by four points, with Jenkins a further 13 points behind Bickley.

Also competing in the 500cc class is 14-year-old Luke Woodhull who has qualified for the last four finals, so is in good form.

A number of former youth championship riders have made their National League debuts this year including Birmingham’s Jack Parkinson Blackburn, Coventry’s Jamie Halder, Sam Bebee, Taylor Hampshire, Kean Dicken and Sam Woolley.

Another Eastbourne junior, Nathan Ablitt, will be looking to keep up his remarkable record in the 150cc class.

British youth speedway boss Neil Vatcher said: “Probably the most amazing story to come out of this year’s series to date is that Nathan Ablitt has yet to lose a race in the whole series.

“With two rounds to go, can Ablitt be the first rider ever to go a whole eight round series undefeated?”

Also in the 150cc class, other local riders to the Eastbourne competing on Saturday are James Laker, Mason O’Rourke and Jamie Bursill.

In the 250cc class Leon Flint who hails from Berwick near the Scottish Borders is leading the series by four points from Jason Edwards again at this stage with each of the competitors dropping their worst round, so again in this class with thirty six points still available over the remaining two rounds certainly all still to play for.

Drew Kemp looks certain to claim the third place prize in this class, unless he can finish the series with two wins to put the pressure on both Flint and Edwards.

In the 125cc class with both the McGurk brothers and Thompson Twins away in the Czech Republic competing for the European 125cc title, there is still a good turn-out in this class with Yorkshire boy Jordan Palin favourite to claim his second win of this year’s series, although don’t rule out Mickie Simpson and nine year old Luke Harrison.

Across the four classes there will be thirty riders competing in thirty four races. The racing begins at 6pm.
