Speedway ace Lewis stars for Wildcats

SPEEDWAY sensation Lewis Bridger has helped Weymouth Wildcats win the Conference League Four-team Championship.

The 15-year-old from Bexhill claimed two second places (4 points) in a thrilling final at Stoke's Loomer Road venue on Saturday night.

His efforts were crucial as the Wildcats saw off the challenge of Oxford by a single point to clinch the club's first ever national team trophy. In fact, Lewis was so nearly the rider who secured overall victory but was overtaken on the final lap of his second race. "He took some big scalps," said proud grandfather Tony Thompson.

Lewis, who is in his first season of competitive speedway, also accumulated four points in the qualifying pool which saw the four-man Wildcats team finish second.

The teenager is considered one of the top prospects in the sport and a couple of weeks ago beat many of the top young riders in the country to win a race during the interval of the British Grand Prix in front of 45,000 people at the Millennium Stadium.
