Sidley see off East Preston

SIDLEY United advanced into the third round of the SCFA RUR Charity Cup with an impressive 2-0 win at home to East Preston.

A goal in each half did the trick. Steve Morris grabbed the first with a superb header virtually from the edge of the EP box after only six minutes, getting sufficient power and direction to an Owen Ball free kick.

They doubled their advantage on the hour when Peter Baker scored his second wonder goal in the matter of four days, letting fly some 30 yards out from wide on the right to beat a goalkeeper who hadn't strayed that far off his line. The goal followed his midweek stunner that saw off Hassocks. "It was a great finish because he was struggling after the game on Wednesday night and had been having treatment on his thigh," revealed joint manager Andy Laskey.

Morris might have had a second soon after his opener, and Darren Witham, Josh Brown and Baker all went close, while, at the other end, EP were limited to half chances by a defence which overcame the absence of Lee Wood who had to drop out in the warm up with a neck injury.

"We put in a tremendous performance," said Laskey. "The first 20 minutes was perhaps the best we have played in the first half this season."

Sidley will be at home to either Rye United or Worthing United in the next round.
