Saxons came from behind to triumph 3-1 at home to a strong Lewes team and make it 13 points from a possible 15 in Sussex Open Hockey League Division One.

The Hastings club started the better of the two teams and looked in control of the game in the early stages. Jon Meredith and Alex Coombs were bossing the midfield and creating chances for the Saxons forwards.

Lewes opened the scoring, however, from an unlikely own goal when a ball crossed from the right deflected in off an unlucky Paddy Cornish.

This served to push Saxons on and they were soon on level terms through a slick short corner routine finished by the in-form Coombs.

The second half was a bad tempered affair with both sides falling foul of the officials. The better hockey was played by Saxons, though, and after great work between Danny Burnett and Jon Meredith, a short corner was converted by Toby Reed to give the home side a deserved lead.

Soon afterwards, captain Jamie Busbridge was sure he had put the game out of reach only for the umpire to rule the whole ball hadn’t crossed the line - oh for goal-line technology!

Saxons survived a spell of pressure before man of the match Chris Meredith scored his third goal in as many games to ensure another positive result.

Second-placed Saxons still trail leaders Hailsham by two points ahead of the trip to St Francis this coming Saturday. Ed Hooton is added to the squad.
