Saints celebrate cup win

ST RICHARD'S under-16s football team are celebrating lifting the South East Sussex Schools League Cup.

Burgeoning Bexhill United talent Sam Fenton was the hero of the hour with a magnificent hat-trick as the year 11 team pulled off a marvellous 3-2 success over Cavendish at Eastbourne United's Oval ground.

Having been resoundingly beaten 5-1 by the same opposition in the Area Cup final only six weeks earlier, the team went into the match with the odds stacked against them.

The game looked set to follow the script when the Eastbourne-based outfit scored from an early corner and nearly repeated the feat five minutes later.

Gradually though St Richard's grew in belief and had an effort cleared off the line before the interval. They carried on where they left off at the start of the second period and Fenton struck twice in five minutes as their battling spirit came to the fore.

Cavendish levelled 10 minutes from time but the Bexhill side remained undaunted. Solid defensive play and aggressive, competitive midfield work from Daniel Andrews and second half substitute Freddie Perry created a close range header for Fenton to win a tremendous game.
