Doncaster Rovers: Get to know Crawley Town's next opponents

The two sides have played each other four times - all in League One.

In the 2012/13 season, Reds won 1-0 at the Keepmoat Stadium before drawing 1-1 at the Broadfield Stadium.

In the 2013/14 season, it was goalless at Doncaster by but Donny ran riot at Crawley, beating the Reds 5-0.

Doncaster Rovers were founded in 1879 and turned professional in 1885.

In recent times, Doncaster beat two Premiership teams in the 2005-06 League Cup – Manchester City and Aston Villa.

They reached the quarter finals of the competition where they met Arsenal. They went ahead in normal time and Arsenal equalised, and in extra time Rovers went up for a second time but Gilberto Silva equalised in injury time and the North London side went on to win on penalties.

Their record goal scorer is Tom Keetley, who scored 186 goals in 241 appearances for Donny between 1923 and 1929.

The following Doncaster players have been included in the Football League 100 Legends list - Republic of Ireland’s Peter Doherty and Scotland’s Billy Bremner.

The management team at Donny are both sons of famous managers, Darren Ferguson, son of Alex, is their current manager and his assistant is Gavin Strachan, son of Gordon.

Ferguson was appointed manager of the then League One club on October 16 2015 after his second spell at Peterborough United.

Doncaster kicked off the season with a 3-2 defeat away at Accrington Stanley.

And they went out of the EFL Cup, losing 2-1 to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night.

We asked Doncaster Free Press reporter Paul Goodwin to highlight a danger man for Donny.

He picked Tommy Rowe and said: “Signing the 27-year-old midfielder following his successful loan period at the end of last season was something of a coup for Rovers.

“And he has started the new season like he ended the last one, finding the net in the opening day defeat at Accrington.

“He is good on the ball and tenacious when trying to win it back.”
