Robertson beaten but Davis wins

Bexhill-based Jimmy Robertson lost his first round tie against world number two Mark Selby, but St Leonards cueman Mark Davis came through a tough battle against David Gilbert.

World number 52 Robertson scored the first 52 points of the match and went on to clinch the opening frame 63-50 after potting blue and pink. Selby edged the next two 67-35 and 69-47 before rattling through the fourth in one visit with a break of 105.

Robertson scored the first 53 points of the first frame after the interval only for Selby to come back and clinch it 68-53. Selby - runner-up in the recent Dafabet Masters - proceeded to complete a 5-1 victory with a break of 80 in frame six.

World number 14 Davis had to work hard to get the better of 36th-ranked Gilbert 5-3 in a match where he was never behind. Davis took the opening frame with a break of 51 only for Gilbert to level with a 75 in the second.

Gilbert opened the third with a 43 only for Davis to come from behind to claim it, but a run of 86 from Gilbert - who was beaten by Davis in the single frame Snooker Shoot-Out last weekend - made it 2-2 at the interval.

Davis edged a fairly lengthy fifth frame to lead 3-2 and despite Gilbert establishing a 38-point advantage in the next via a run of 63, Davis recovered to win it courtesy of 20 points in fouls and a 33 break.

Runs of 38 and 48 ensured that Gilbert closed to 4-3 and he began the eighth with a 49, yet despite a top run of just 24, Davis again came from behind to claim the frame helped by four fouls from his opponent. Davis will face Graeme Dott in round two this evening.
