Karl's cracker puts Rooks back on track

Conference SouthThurrock 2 Lewes 3Karl Beckford's won the game for the Rooks with a spectacular 30-yard bending free-kick into the top corner in the 62nd minute.

Midfielder Beckford has produced a number of wonder strikes since he came to the Dripping Pan in August though manager Steve King believes he still has to produce the goods with his workrate.

No matter, three points sent the Rooks into sixth spot in the table with 14 points and will have provided a much-needed boost to confidence for tomorrow's important FA Cup second qualifying round tie at Leyton.

Both teams tightened their defences after the break, with Thurrock equalising on 57 minutes from the penalty spot after a foul on Terry Bowes.

Four minutes later came Beckford's superb free-kick to give Lewes a 3-2 lead and the Rooks were content to soak up the pressure in the final half-hour which was blighted by a 20-man brawl after substitute Amos Foweya and goalkeeper Glenn Knight had clashed.
