It's salvage at Sidley

WORTHING CC on Saturday reined back one of their rivals in a growingly competitive battle to avoid the league wooden spoon.

Tailender Kevin Punter, with 16, and skipper David Rogers played out for a draw with eight wickets down and the points were as good as shared.

After galling umpiring decisions accounted for in-form Ben Shelford and Alex Harris, Sidley's Indian off-spinning all-rounder Saffi Ahmed had outfoxed the lower middle order.

This included bowling left-hander Andy Lutwyche around his legs to leave Worthing 87 for six. But then Chris Mansell lasted 36 minutes to begin the rearguard action.

Debutant Lloyd Osland, the Northbrook parks footballer, then joined his captain and impressed to score 16 in 31 minutes before a run-call dilemma meant Rogers had to choose between his own wicket and that of the teenager.
