H&B face tough Trophy test

HASTINGS & Bexhill will have to lift their play appreciably if they are to cause one of the upsets of the season and beat Lewes in the Sussex Rugby Trophy.

This is the view of manager Rob Hamilton who was dissatisfied with the performance, if not the result, in the 5-0 Sussex One victory over Heathfield & Waldron last Saturday and London Three South East promotion-seekers Lewes are guaranteed to be a far stiffer proposition.

Looking ahead to the quarter-final on Saturday February 28, Hamilton said: "To compete with Lewes we will have to raise our game considerably to put it mildly. They are an extremely good side and they will probably fancy their chances at home of dispatching us pretty comfortably. We will obviously be outsiders and I don't think many people will give us much chance but it wouldn't be the first time we've beaten a side from a higher league.

"It's not an impossibility but we travel in hope rather than expectation - it would be ridiculous to say we expect to beat Lewes."

Prop Ilian Granville (back) should be fit to return but Tony Roche's fine performance at Heathfield means he "is in the reckoning" to keep his place. Andy Hitch returns but Dave Sprinks is unavailable. Rob Sparks (ribs) is a doubt but Paul Flood should make it. Nick Edmunds is in contention for a starting berth after being among the replacements last week while Ben Woolcott should play some part after being an unused substitute.
