Widdrington: Crazy 7-3 victory sums up season

Borough have proved an attacking force this campaign and only six teams in the National League South have scored more than Widdrington’s young charges.

The problem for them has been closing the back door. The Sports have conceded 56 goals and only St Albans and Hemel Hempstead from the top 13 have shipped more.

“Our defending at times was like the Ant Hill Mob chasing Penelope Pitstop,” said Widdrington. “Everytime we took the lead we let them right back in it.

“That 90 minutes was a reflection of our season. As an attacking force any team in this division will struggle to stop us. Getting the balance right has been a problem for us. I was fuming at some of the defending but credit to the lads they came back three times and then pulled away at the end. But the game should have been put to bed long before.”

One key point proven on Tuesday was that Borough still have goals in them despite the recent departure of freescoring striker Elliott Romain. Jamie Taylor netted a hat-trick but it may not be enough to earn the 35-year-old a contract for next season.

“It’s a discussion we need to have. I love Jamie Taylor but his body will dictate what he can and can’t do.

“On Tuesday he was flying around like a teenager but we have to be realistic about what he can contribute for next season. There are discussions that need to take place with the chairman. Once we are clear on the budget and future plans then I can start working out what is best for the club and for players like Jamie Taylor. Do I offer terms to Jamie who at 35 maybe looking at between 15-20 games a season or do you look at other options? That all has to be discussed.

Widdrington added, “There’s nothing I want more than to take this club forward. But if you want to compete for promotion, the simple fact is that funds have to be available. That’s what we will be discussing imminently.”

Borough are on the road tomorrow (Saturday, 3pm) at basement outfit Margate. The Gate look certain for relegation but Widdrington is preparing his men for a testing trip. “They are playing for their futures and I expect nothing less than a very tough outing.”
