Under-18s football: Merrick's magic lifts Bosham

Bosham, Barnham, Felpham Colts Youth and Bosham Colts were all winners in the latest round of under-18 football.

Bosham 1 Predators 0

Following an exit from the challenge cup, Bosham had to concentrate on league duties and get back to winning ways.

On a hot Sunday morning both teams struggled a little in the heat with only a handful of chances falling to either side.

Bosham did create good opportunities but were off-target.

In the second half, Bosham started the brighter creating a chance within the first minute.

Midway through the second half, Bosham had a good move broken down by Predators, who quickly created a good chance to take the lead but Callum Fewell in the Bosham goal saved.

Bosham enjoyed a good last 20 minutes and a great strike rom Phil Merrick just inside the box won them the game.

On a blistering day both teams set off at a lively pace, but home side Barnham failed to take their initial chances with George Bennett forcing a fine save from the Arundel keeper and Pete Dearden looking dangerous.

Barnham had more than their fair share of the ball and with the number of corners and free-kicks they had it was a surprise when an Arundel striker latched on to a corner to drill the ball in.

In the second half Barnham were rewarded when George Bennett scored with a fine shot into the corner.

Ten minutes later, a free-kick fell to Bennett, who backheeled the ball to allow Marcus Taylor to convert.

Arundel never stopped working and were a constant threat.

But five minutes later Colts were level with a well-taken goal and soon after that took the lead.

Youth tried to respond and when Riseborough was impeded Brad Lambert’s free-kick drew a good save from the Colts keeper.

Soon after the break Youth were back on level terms, Lambert combining with Riseborough, who shot low into the far corner.

Riseborough outstripped the Colts full-back for pace and after a desperate lunge brought him down, the referee had no hesitation pointing to the spot. Up stepped Alex Gardener to smash home the spot kick.

Colts pressed hard for an equaliser but thanks to resolute defending and one spectacular save from Calvin Negus, Youth held on for three points.
