Rye ready for intriguing cup clash

Rye United face an intriguing Sussex Senior Cup second round tie tonight (Wednesday).

The Sussex County Football League Division One high-flyers will entertain Ryman Division One South promotion hopefuls Bognor Regis Town.

“It will be interesting to see us against Bognor because they’re flying in Ryman South,” said Rye manager Scott Price. “That’s going to be a test.”

Rye are second in the league on the back of three consecutive victories - the latest of which was a 3-2 success at home to East Grinstead Town on Saturday - and have scored 53 goals in their 17 league matches so far.

Bognor are third in their league - which is one level above Sussex Division One - having picked up 27 points from their first 12 league games. The Rocks won 5-0 at Walton Casuals on Saturday.

Rye knocked out Ryman Division One South opposition in the form of Worthing en route to the quarter-finals of last season’s competition and will take on another side from that league, Burgess Hill Town, if they win tonight.

Sam Adams is available after completing a three-match ban, but speaking after the East Grinstead game, Price didn’t expect goalkeeper Josh Pelling to be fit in time. Kick-off at The Salts is 7.30pm.

A summary of the game will appear on this website tomorrow morning.
