Plenty of interest in U’s job

United director Rudkins said that “quite a few” people had expressed an interest in succeeding Terry White - who resigned on Monday night - within 24 hours of the news becoming public knowledge.

He said: “It says a lot about the club and how big the club is. It’s a proper club, although obviously we would like to be higher in the pyramid than we are.

“For a manager to come in they’ve certainly got a decent amount of opportunities to progress the club. We’re still in a decent position from the FA Cup run a couple of years ago and for the right manager I think it will be a good job.

“After the weekend we will be starting to look at the CVs that come in and arrange meetings. We don’t need to rush it, but the sooner a decision can be made, the better.”

Nigel Kane - who was unavailable for comment - will take over the reins in a caretaker capacity for the FA Cup second round qualifying tie away to Grays Athletic on Saturday.

“Nigel’s very capable,” added Rudkins. “He knows the club inside out and he knows the players. He’s been successful at Hastings before and he’s a safe pair of hands as caretaker manager. Obviously if he’s interested, he’ll be considered like anyone else.”
