It was a cagey first half with the hosts slightly more dominant but thanks to three one-on-one saves from James Binfield, Pagham went in level at the interval.

This gave Pagham manager Jon Tucker an opportunity to make tactical changes and it seemed to make all the difference as they took the lead a minute after the break.

The ball was played out wide to Tarrell Lewis, who beat his man before whipping in a dangerous cross which found Kew at the back post and he fired home the rebound after his initial shot was blocked.

From that point, the visitors dominated and they could have doubled their lead on 70 minutes but Kieran Playle-Howard’s long-range effort hit the post.

Tucker was delighted to pick up three points on the road against a difficult Hailsham side.

“It was a tough place to go so going up there to get three points, which we desperately needed, was a good plus for the team.

“Binfield pulled off three world-class saves and kept us in the game, and then I chatted to them at half time, changed a few things and in the second half we scored straight away.

“We could have scored a couple more but to come away with three points at Hailsham with a clean sheet is very pleasing, considering the pair they have up front.”

Pagham: Binfield, Brown, Warren (Cox 60), Boniface, Davidson, Kew (Grommet 70), Lewis (Murfin), Swain, Kempson, Simons, Playle-Howard.

GEORGE BOULTON

In midweek, four goals from Dan Simmonds and one each from Alex Kew and Kieron Playle-Howard eased the Linos to a 6-1 RUR Cup win at Steyning.
