The left-back has a minor hamstring injury and Blues boss Maurizio Sarri says Alonso needs to rest for three or four days. Italy international Emerson could take Alonso's place in the starting line-up.

Winger Eden Hazard and N'Golo Kante are both set to return to the Chelsea starting line-up after being rested at Cardiff on Sunday.

Asked if the duo will start against Brighton, Sarri said: "I don’t know but I think so. They rested in the last match. We need to consider that N’Golo this season has played 50 matches and Hazard 48. In the last two weeks they played with the national teams for two matches so sometimes they need to rest.

"Now they are okay."

Young England winger Callum Hudson-Odoi is also in contention to make his first Premier League start.

Sarri said: "I know very well Callum and I want him to improve more because the potential is there. Callum is always in my mind, in my opinion he is our future and now he is ready to play.

"Probably he will start tomorrow or in the next match."
