Video: Priory on a high for run-in

That’s the view of first team coach Ian Gillespie after Priory got their Sussex Cricket League Division Two top two bid back on track with a splendid victory at home to Ifield last weekend.

Priory bowled their opponents out for 80 to seal a 100-run win with fast bowler Adam Barton recording superb figures of 8-24.

Gillespie said: “The euphoria when Jed (O’Brien) got the final wicket was perfect and obviously that has put us on a real high. The team’s got a buzz about it again and we’re looking forward to this weekend.”

Third-placed Priory are 12 points behind second-placed Worthing and 17 adrift of leaders Lindfield in what now looks to be a three-way battle for two promotion places.

“We’ve got to finish I think with three wins if we want to get promoted,” continued Gillespie. “We finished the first half of the fixtures with five wins in a row and were really strong at halfway, and we’ve got to do the same thing now.”

Although Priory’s remaining fixtures are all against the division’s bottom three clubs, the next two are away from home and they’ve lost five games out of seven on their travels so far.

Priory will travel to third-bottom Ansty tomorrow (Saturday) and second-bottom Findon next weekend before hosting Crowhurst Park on Saturday September 5.

“We’ve got to overcome that jinx of playing away from home,” Gillespie added. “I don’t think there’s any great reason for it; we’ve just got to put it right and win those games.

“The good thing for us is that Ansty and Findon are both battling each other to stay up so they should be very positive I would like to think against us and they will be looking for as many points as they can get.

“There’s no advantage to them just to block it out. They should be positive games of cricket with both teams trying to win and that’s really all you can ask for at this stage of the season.”

George Campbell and Elliot Hooper are expected to return, while Finn Hulbert should keep his place.

Lindfield’s remaining games are away to St James’s Montefiore and Ansty, and at home to Ifield. Worthing will host Findon and Pagham, and visit St James’s.
