Roffey CC KO Guildford to ease the pain of defeat to East Grinstead

George Fleming took 3-8 as the Surrey Championship hosts were all out for 110 in 37.2 overs.

Roffey’s reply did have an early wobble before George and brother Josh Fleming guided them to victory to ease some of the pain for losing the day before at East Grinstead in the league.

Roffey made the last 16 in the country in the competition two years ago and Fleming said: “There’s still three games of the regionals left so a long way to go.

“But the format of limited overs suits us so we always look forward to playing on a Sunday and as long as we don’t have issues with availability we should do well.

“We made the last 16 two years ago but we have to take it game by game and see how far it takes us.”

Fleming won the toss and after inviting the hosts to wield the willow first they made a strong start, putting on 34 for the first wicket.

Alex Collins (2-26) though struck first and from there wickets tumbled with regularity, and Leigh Harrison also finished with 2-27.

Fleming jigged the batting order to give others a try at the top, and there were a few jitters as Craig Williams, Aaron Jeal, Rohit Jagota, Matt Davies and Mark Pavlovic were all dismissed.

But from 53-5 the Fleming brothers ensured the trip home was a happy one, as Josh made an unbeaten 25 and George and unbeaten 29 to see them through.

The day before Roffey suffered a two-wicket defeat at East Grinstead - the side’s first loss of the new season.

Rohit Jagota made 46 and George Fleming 26 as Roffey were first bowled out for 143. Fleming felt that was 40 runs short, and his concerns were realised despite his side chalking up eight wickets, as the hosts snuck home in what was their first completed match.

Roffey’s overseas bowler Matt Varner took 4-41, and a good opening spell with Abdul Khan reduced the hosts to 35-5 before Bradley Hatchett’s unbeaten 58 steered them back on course for victory. Fleming added: “We bowled well but dropped a few catches while they had some brilliant takes, it was small margins.”
