Littlehampton set for title shoot-out

Littlehampton travel to league leaders West Chiltington & Thakeham with just four points separating the two teams at the top.

Littlehampton know that a victory – or possibly a winning draw – will be enough to see them secure promotion back into the Sussex Cricket League.

Going into the penultimate round of fixtures, Littlehampton trailed leaders West Chiltington by 14 points. However, an impressive 86-run success over Pulborough gave them the full 30-points, while the table-toppers could only collect 20 despite their win over Arundel, who are now out of the title race.

Askew said: “I would say it is the biggest game for this club in five seasons. All of the players are really looking forward to it and know what can potentially be achieved.

“The club dropped out of the Sussex League five years ago and we all want to be back there again.

“For a town the size of Littlehampton and it’s cricket team not to be in the Sussex League is a shame but we can put that right on Saturday.

“We want to go places as a team and, if we can clinch promotion, hopefully, we would keep progressing.

“I’ve not played at West Chiltington before but a few of the lads have said it’s a nice ground with a good track, so I’m hopeful we can get the right result and achieve promotion.”

Askew has been in fine form this season and hit his eighth hundred this year in his side’s success over Pulborough.

However, he admitted personal glory will count for nothing should Littlehampton not achieve promotion.

He added: “Look, I’ve been really impressed with the way I have batted this year.

“It’s been a great season for me on a personal note and on Saturday I am hoping it is from a team viewpoint as well.

“If we do not get promoted, it would be a real shame and all those runs would count for nothing. But, hopefully, I can chip in with some more runs and we will be playing Sussex League cricket next season.”
