Breeder Nicky's Olympic dressage dream

WHEN Nicky Callam's horse High Hoes Dajana won the Biotal Equine Gold Medium Restricted Winter Dressage Championships at Hartpury recently, ridden by Emma Openshaw, it was an immense achievement.

Petworth-based Nicky only started the mare in competitions because 11-year-old Dajana had missed getting in foal.

Dajana competed in her first affiliated event only 18 months ago and started at Novice level, so to win a major national medium championship in such a short time was outstanding.

"She was 11th in the Novice and eighth in the Elementary in the Summer Nationals last year. To get there and be placed was a dream and the icing kept going on the cake and her Winter Championship win was exceptional.

"She is a Westaphalian Premium mare and has got the German seal of approval for breeding.

"It has been a difficult decision to try to put her back in foal after a gap year. But my aim is to breed an Olympic dressage horse and I have got to breed from my best mares to do that," she said.
