Blues reach final

RUSTINGTON Football Club are through to the Vernon-Wentworth Cup final after a 2-1 extra-time win at South Bersted on Monday.

They will meet Horsham YMCA Reserves in the final at a venue and date to be decided. Rustington will look to lift the trophy for a third successive season.

After a scoreless 90 minutes when Blues missed several chances, South Bersted almost won it but they fired over from two yards. Then, Rustington defender Rob Butcher made an excellent tackle to deny a shooting opportunity.

Early in extra-time, Rustington took the lead when Andy Smart turned his marker and fired home his 23rd goal of the season.

Blues keeper Andy McCarthy kept the score at 1-0 early in the second period before Rustington substitute, Dale Nally, hit his first goal for the club with a stunning strike into the top corner.

Bersted pulled a goal back from the penalty spot but Rustington comfortably held on.
