Benn targets promotion

LITTLEHAMPTON Cricket Club will be aiming for promotion back into Sussex League Premier Division this year.

They were relegated two years ago, on the last day of the season, and, after a promising start last campaign, they finished sixth.

Benn Challen will captain the club for a second season and they have a new overseas player, Indian top-order batsman, Amit Gupta. He replaces South African all-rounder Siya Sibiya.

Gupta misses the opening game of the season at Pulborough on Saturday because he is still taking exams. Also out, for the first three games, will be wicketkeeper-batsman Chris Kirkham.

Kirkham has been playing for High Wycombe, in Perth, Australia, during the winter, where he has struck two centuries.

Challen also played five games in Australia for Perth.

Fast bowler, Luke Vinter, who played for Littlehampton two years ago, has joined Brighton from Chichester. He travelled with Sussex on their tour to Dubai and is still hoping to get a professional contract.

Challen said: "Promotion is definitely the aim. There are some good teams in the league this year, though. Chichester and St James both came down and there's Haywards Heath as well.

"We've probably got a better squad this year. Matt Staight is back and Justin Scott will be around for the whole year, after joining midway through last season.

"Chris Kirkham has been playing in Australia the whole winter and all the youngsters are a year older."
