Barry blow for Bexhill

OPENING batsman Martin Barry has left Bexhill Cricket Club to return to Crowhurst Park just two games into the new season.

Barry has been a prolific run scorer for the Brewers East Sussex League Division One outfit in the past and according to Bexhill skipper Steve Phillimore had lost his appetite for life at the Polegrove.

Phillimore was disappointed at the departure but insisted the split was amicable. He said: "To do it after two league games is disappointing. But he said his motivation was lacking. He found himself going out to bat and his mind wasn't on the job."

He went on: "He's a good player - one of our better batters. But he's made his mind up to go back to Crowhurst Park where he scored lots of runs in the past and hopefully he will again and I couldn't argue with that."

Barry becomes the second player to exit the Sussex Division Two club this year following Lloyd Waughman's pre-season switch to Hastings Priory but Phillimore is happy with the depth of the squad and feels he has a ready-made replacement at the top of the order in the shape of Matthew Blackman. He continued: "Over the years he's been our best Sussex League batter still at the club. He's a fantastic player to come in. It does not weaken us in any way."

Bexhill visit Cuckfield on Saturday May 24.
