Athletics: Chichester trio star on regional and national level

Jess Breach starred in the South of England under-15 girls’ pentathlon at Abingdon.

She came fourth with 2,658 points – just points off bronze – and her highlight was a 5.18m long jump which should see her selected for the Sussex Schools team for the ESAA T&F championships.

At the same meeting Jamie Moore ended third in the under-20 men’s decathlon.

Moore notched a new personal best of 6.15m and gave strong performances in the other disciplines.

He finished the event with a gun-to-tape victory in the 1,500m in a time that was less then a second behind that recorded in the senior men’s competition, which featured three GB internationals.

Izzie Brown was second on countback with 1.72m, equalling her outdoor best, in the South of England under-20 high jump at Bedford.

Moore and Brown, meanwhile, have been awarded the Steve Duke Memorial Trophy in recognition of their fifth places at the English Schools combined championships in 2011.

Chichester’s young athletes have been busy with schools athletics events at which they’ve found much success.

Following a string of victories in the Sussex Schools championships at Crawley on Saturday, eight have put themselves in contention for coveted places in the Sussex team at the English Schools championships at Gateshead in July.

At the same venue on Tuesday teams from Bishop Luffa and Chichester Boys High School had a successful day in the regional final of the English Schools Association track and field cup.

The High school came top in the intermediate boys’ age group while Bishop Luffa had a second, third and fourth from their three teams.
