Angmering hold annual junior championships

ANGMERING-on-Sea Lawn Tennis Club held its annual Junior Club Championships at the weekend.

The first week of the summer school holidays every year is junior week. Coaching takes place every morning, with championship matches every afternoon.

On average, 65 children attended the coaching each morning and more than 100 matches were played during the week.

Max Hankinson won the 18 and under boys’ title with a 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 victory over Sam Hesling.

Full results – boys’ 18 and under: Hankinson beat Hesling 6-1, 6-7, 6-2. 18 and under consolation: Ben Longley beat Adam Hughes 6-1, 6-3. 18 and under doubles: Hankinson and Alex Watt beat Tom Cosham and Hesling 6-1, 6-1.

16 and under singles; Charlie Poland beat Ben Longley 7-5, 6-0. 16 & under consolation: Adam Hughes beat Joshua Plumb 6-2, 6-3.

16 and under doubles: Charlie Poland & Ben Longley beat Sam & Tom Hesling 6-2, 6-3.

14 and under singles: Tom Hesling beat Thomas Hooper 6-2, 6-3. 14 and under consolation: Alfie Cook beat Harry Elles 7-5, 7-5. 14 and under doubles: Alfie Cook and Thomas Hesling beat Thomas Hooper and Harry Elles 6-4, 6-3.

12 and under singles: Jason Handley beat Sam Williams 0-6, 6-3, 0-3 ret.

12 and under doubles: Jason Handley and Will Taunton beat Tom Hesling and Alfie Cook 6-4, 6-4.

Ten and under singles: Phoenix Ashworth beat Joseph Alman 4-0, 4-0.

Nine and under singles: Will Taunton beat Kai Nicholas 7-2, 7-2.

Eight and under singles: Will Taunton beat Joshua Wheeler 10-2.

Girls’ 12 and under singles: Alicia Hope beat Christina Elliot 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

12 and under doubles: Charlotte Macgovern and Chloe Edwards beat Christina Elliot and Sophie Williams 6-2, 6-4.

Ten and under singles: Olivia Venditto beat Sophie Williams 4-0, 4-0.

Nine and under singles: Evelyn Oliver beat Isabelle Hope 4-7, 7-5, 7-1.

Eight and under singles: Sofia Maine beat Rachel Martin 10-6.

n Angmering had another successful weekend in the Aegon Team Tennis Sussex League.

The men’s first and second sides won their matches without losing a single rubber in the process.

Angmering’s first team travelled to Seaford Lawn Tennis Club and recorded an emphatic 6-0 victory.

Ben Stride got the team off to the best possible start with a straight sets 6-3, 6-1 success.

In the second rubber, Patrick Keane made it 2-0 as he picked up another straight sets success.

David Savage produced a dominant display as he took his game 6-1, 6-1 and Sam Oakley rounded off the singles with another victory in straight sets.

In the doubles, Stride and Oakley teamed up to record a 6-2, 6-0 win, while Keane and Savage completed the emphatic win with another convincing win in straight sets.

There was more good news for the club as the men’s second team recorded a whitewash win over Brighton & Parks at Angmering.

Alex Watt got the tie underway with a 6-0, 6-2 win and that was followed up with a win in straight sets for Andrew Cook.

The second team were in complete control of the match and Max Hankinson (6-0, 6-1) and Ben Horley (6-0, 6-0) rounded off the singles in quick time.

Watt and Hankinson teamed up in the doubles and ran out 6-3, 6-0 winners, while Horley and Cook secured the whitewash with another straight sets win.

The mixed veterans team also had a good weekend as they won 3-1 at home to Brighton & Parks.

Derek Harndean and Julie Pearce won their rubbers 6-1, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-2.
