Youths Arrested for School Firework Attack

TWO 17 year-old youths have been arrested and given police bail pending further enquiries after a firework was launched into the grounds of Bexhill High School last week.

The arrests came the day after four pupils were hospitalised by a rocket exploding in the school playground last Thursday.

The four students were taken to the Conquest Hospital. One was transferred to the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead and treated for burns. All have now been released.

DC Anton Affonso of Rother CID said: "There were a number of children in the playground and in the area outside where the firework was launched. We are appealing for anyone who saw what happened to contact detectives at Bexhill on 0845 60 70 999 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Rother District Commander, Chief Inspector Steve Brookman, said: "We continually re-enforce the message about the dangers of fireworks as there are real safety risks associated with them. We hope anyone considering buying or discharging fireworks in a public place takes this into consideration."

"Sussex Police will be targeting any anti -social behaviour and will be utilising powers to issue fixed penalty notices for inappropriate fireworks offences. Parents are encouraged not to allow children to have access to fireworks and to know the firework regulations.

"We recommend the safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend an organised display in your local area." High School principal Mike Conn said yesterday that all four victims had returned to school.

"One is still receiving treatment but they are all back in their education. In fact three of them took their GCSE English examination on Monday.

"We are helping the one who is still receiving treatment. He comes into school each day but goes off for treatment.

"We are offering the police every help and cooperation with their investigation."
