Young mother dies in Southwick blaze

A YOUNG single mother died following a fire in her Southwick flat, and firefighters say her life could have been saved if a smoke alarm had been fitted in the property.

Emma Macintosh (25), a mother of one, was found dead on her sofa by firefighters broke into her home in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The blaze started in the kitchen of her first floor flat and it is likely she was killed in her sleep by the thick black smoke which quickly enveloped the property. Her young child was being cared for by its grandmother at another address during the night.

Early investigations suggest the 25-year-old arrived home from a night out and began cooking food in the kitchen before falling asleep on the sofa.
