Windmill Cinema to re-open this month

NEARLY a year to the day since it closed, the Windmill Cinema is set to re-open this month – with three of the first films to screen now announced.

The cinema will re-open on February 21 and will be run by Windmill Cinema Ltd – a company run by mobile cinema operators CineMobile.

The exact details of the programme are still being worked out, but three films to be screened at the cinema include Philimena, starring Steve Coogan and Judi Dench, the Railway Man, starring Colin Firth, and the Disney hit Frozen.

For The Windmill Cinema Supporters Group, which had a key role in getting the cinema to re-open, the opening night on February 21 will in many ways represent the culmination of a year’s hard work.

Phil McEarlain, co-founder of the group, said: “We will be absolutely delighted when the cinema opens again. One of the problems last time with the Windmill was a lack of publicity, so we’re looking forward to helping with that. A key part of that publicity will be getting things on public notice boards and in shops. We’re looking to supply details for each set of films that comes out.”

A deal to re-open the Windmill Cinema was agreed between CineMobile and Inspire Leisure in December last year.

The cinema will begin by opening several days a week, though if it is popular it could be increased.

It is understood CineMobile has agreed a short-term deal to screen the films for several months, though it is hoped this can be extended if it proves successful.
