High summer: Next Saturday August 29th the Winchelsea Bonfire Boyes are having their annual High summer hog roast beginning at 7pm in the New Hall. Tickets are £15 adults and £7 children and have to be bought in advance by calling 01797 224446. The meal will be served with a selection of delicious salads and be followed by strawberries and cream. A licensed Bar and raffle will be available and during the evening the Sussex Brass Band will entertain with popular music. The Band started out in 1968 in Hastings and St Leonards and includes Bb Cornets, Bb Flugelhorn, Eb Tenor Horns, a selection of Tubas in Eb and double Bbb, plus more. They also have a varied repertoire consisting of traditional “brass band music” through to marches, jazz and pop.

Fete a success: Organisers of this year’s Summer Fete, Jo and Deborah, thank the volunteers, cake makers, stall holders, the visitors and everybody else who helped to make the Fete a success. The funds raised came to £3581.51 and after expenses will be shared by the St Thomas’ Church Roof Appeal, Pipewell Gate Appeal, Pett Level Rescue Boat, Rye Sea Cadets and Rother Responders.

Rye Festival in Winchelsea: Events hosted by Winchelsea during September will be the Cellar Tours led by local history experts on Tuesday 15th Thursday 17th, Saturday 19th, Sunday 20th, Tuesday 22nd and Wednesday 23rd all starting at 11am at the Town Well in Castle Street and tickets are £7.50 each. On Friday 18th at 2.30 for 3pm in St Thomas’ Church there will be a talk on the Magna Carta by Sir Robert Worcester (Committee Chairman for the 800th Anniversary of the Magna Carta) arranged by Winchelsea Archaeological Society. The talk concerns why King John’s bargain with his barons is still very significant today. Two other events at St Thomas’ Church are: Stile Antico who will be performing on Tuesday 22nd at 7 for 7.30pm. The group of twelve members is an innovative vocal ensemble well-known in Europe and North America. Secondly: Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman who were voted Best Duo in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2013 will be performing on Friday 25th at 7 for 7.30pm. Church times: As part of their tour of Kent and East Sussex the Choir of All Saints, Fulham sang Evensong at St Thomas’ Church last Sunday afternoon. The service was based upon the Book of Common Prayer and the choir gave a sensitive and uplifting performance of the psalms and canticles. The responses of knowing when to stand up and sit down during the ceremony are part of Anglican ritual but are not always clear to everyone which meant some furtive glancing from left to right to ensure keeping in step. This is simple proof that it is always good to be wise and think ahead. And wisdom was the theme in the Morning’s Holy Communion service with the reading from Ephesians 5:15-20: ‘See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.’ The services for this weekend are the Holy Communion services for tomorrow (Saturday) at 9.30am and then on Sunday as a Sung Eucharist at 10.30am.

Free Activities: The Street Games Team invites all to have fun and make friends while enjoying sports activities on the Recreation Ground at Dogs Hill. ‘Street Games’ was launched in 2007 and is a sports charity that brings sport to young people in a wide-range of communities across the UK, helping people to become the best they can through taking part in sports initiatives. This is a Friday afternoon event in the village so come along today at 4 till 5.30pm, have fun and meet the team.

Table Sale: Tomorrow (Saturday) a Table Sale will be held at the Community Hall starting at 2pm. A cup of tea and biscuit are included in the 40p entrance fee and during the event there will be a Good Tombola. Fortnightly Bingo: On Wednesday August 26th an evening of Cash Bingo will take place in the Community Hall with Eyes Down for good concentration as from 7.15pm. During the evening there will be refreshments on sale plus a raffle with good prizes and children are welcome accompanied by an adult.

Open Studio: “Ocean Ceramics” will be on offer at 7 Windmill Way over the Bank Holiday weekend next Friday 28th to Monday 31st August from 11am to 5pm. There will be free drinks and the sale of sea-themed, hand-made, original and useful ceramics at reasonable prices. You are invited to come and see.

New dog bin: Who would steal a dog bin probably crammed with poo? Icklesham Parish Council has recently agreed to purchase a replacement dog bin for the one damaged/stolen at Harbour Field. This essential container does not come cheap and the total cost including installation is £252.27. A donation from the vandal/thief would help make up for the short-fall.
