Bank Holiday Art: Every August Bank Holiday weekend The Annual Art Exhibition is held in The Lower Court Hall, below the Museum, by kind permission of The Mayor. This year it will be open tomorrow Saturday and Sunday August 27th & 28th from 10am until 6pm and on Monday August 29th from 10am until 3.45 pm. Admission is free and there will be paintings, photographs and pottery for sale. The Exhibition is organised by The Winchelsea Millennium Artefacts Society to raise funds for the upkeep of the Town's artefacts which celebrate the 2000 Millennium. These are the Town Sign opposite the New Inn, the Millennium Tapestry in St. Thomas' Church and the Town Beacon at the site of the old Windmill. All are welcome to the Exhibition and a Grand Raffle will be available. The prizes include a year's subscription for two for The National Art Pass which is a Small Card offering Big Experiences such as free entry to over 225 museums, galleries and historic houses as well as half price entry to major exhibitions. In addition, you could win a quarterly illustrated magazine, a painting of the Medieval Pipewell Gate, a well-filled hamper and a pottery bowl. The Raffle Draw will be announced at 3.45pm on Monday August 29th when the Exhibition closes.

WAS Under Winchelsea: Guided Cellar Tours arranged by Winchelsea Archaeological Society (WAS) will take place on Monday August 29th and Saturday September 3rd both from 2 till 3.30pm, meeting at the Town Well in Castle Street. Guide books describing these 13th century cellars will be provided and the cost is £5 p.p. with proceeds in aid of WAS. The contact number for bookings is 01797 224446. During the tour you will discover more about the archaeology and intriguing history of medieval Winchelsea.

Autumn Show: This year’s Autumn Show by the Garden Society takes place next Saturday September 3rd at 2pm in the New Hall. Visitors can look forward to displays of well-grown vegetables, fruit, flowers, shrubs, delicious cookery items, floral art, handicrafts and a raffle with horticultural prizes. Admission is free and there will be plenty of fun, also light refreshments and a plant sale. For Garden Society members a bumper crop of entries is anticipated and the exhibits don’t have to be perfect. Children are welcome to have a go in their special class. Once, the village show was a central part of a community but in recent years it has faded away, however Winchelsea Garden Society is determined not to follow this trend. Those who are exhibiting please note that entry forms need to be in by Thursday September 1st at 7.30pm to Sally Rhodda (secretary).

Mosquito Day: Usually not much happens in August, apart from catching up on chores, as almost everyone is away on holiday. Nevertheless, we have just had Mosquito Day which is observed every year on August 20th (mainly by the School of Tropical Medicine) and commemorates the discovery in 1897 by the British Doctor Sir Ronald Ross that female anopheles’ mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans. These mosquitoes are particularly active at night and for those travellers planning to holiday in tropical regions don’t forget to take anti-malaria tablets.

Ordinary time in August: The church describes the period following Epiphany and Pentecost as Ordinary time which is the number of Sundays before Advent. This space of time between main events which runs through the summer holidays and into autumn is an opportunity to consider life’s journey and is used by ministers to focus on, not-so-ordinary, themes of interest and importance to the congregation.

Sale Tomorrow: There will be a Table Sale tomorrow August 27th in the Community Hall starting at 11am. Many great bargains are available and entry cost of 50p includes tea and biscuits. As usual it is a friendly social gathering so do bring your friends and visitors are always welcome. Also plenty of good prizes in the raffle and tombola. The proceeds from the Sale will go towards the Winchelsea Beach Community Association.

Ocean Ceramics: Open Studios is once more open for viewing and to purchase original pieces of ceramic art work inspired by the sea. All items are at reasonable prices. There will be free drinks on arrival and the venue is 7 Windmill Way TN36 4LF (Winchelsea Beach) on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th September, between 11am and 5pm.
