The Royal Oak

Last weekend’s Village Hall Jumble Sale was a great success and raised more money for the upkeep of the Village Hall. Thank you to everyone who donated goods and to those that helped out on the day, it was a really nice atmosphere and we hope to hold another one soon.

It’s Irish Music Night at The Royal Oak on Friday July 26 which is always a brilliant evening when talented musicians join together for a jamming style session of tradition Irish tunes. This is a popular evening so it’s wise to get to the pub early or book a table on 01424 870492.

The Royal Oak boules team are still in fine form and won their match this week! It has been a pleasure to play or just watch the team in the garden during these lovely summer evenings. A full fixtures list is displayed at The Royal Oak, but there are matches either home or away every Wednesday evening and supporters are always welcome.

The pub quiz is still held every Thursday evening at The Royal Oak from 8pm. This has turned into a very popular evening with quite a number of teams competing each week! A healthy rivalry has developed and the evening is always good fun, so if you would like to come along it’s worth calling 01424 870492 to book a table for your team of up to six people.

News from Jeffrey, our Church Warden:

This coming weekend is the Patronal one for St Mary Magdalene, on Saturday there will be cream teas in the village hall served between 2pm and 4.30pm, together with some other attractions.

On Sunday there are two services, the usual 8.30am in the hall, plus Patronal Evensong at 6pm in the churchyard. If the weather is wet this will be in the church building, but either way bring your own chair please! The Evensong will be followed by a range of light refreshments as usual and the church will be open to let people see the progress inside.

Progress with the building continues with the electricians on site, as well as a conservator who is cleaning the smoke damage from the stone work. We now have the water supply switched on and there is good progress with the plumbing as well. The planning application with the diocese is currently pending for the final phase of the works, this will then enable us to place orders with furniture suppliers and also for the new digital organ.

I know from previous years that the church cream teas are are absolutely delicious and I believe the weather is going to be good at the weekend too, so do make a date in your diary to go along!

Valerie confirmed to me that Mountfield and Whatlington School Fete was a great success, particularly in the lovely weather we enjoyed last weekend. A full report is included in this week’s Mountfield Village Voice.
