Wetherspoons say: We'll talk to worried residents

J.D. WETHERSPOON says it is willing to address local concerns over its proposed new pub in Wickham Avenue.

Some residents have expressed fears that the pub, planned for the old Hastings Glass premises, will lead to late-night noise, parking problems and attract the yob element with the temptation of cut-price alcohol.

Neighbours in the Wickham Avenue area have launched a majoy Say No To Wetherspoon's poster campaign. Other publicans say the town already has too many licensed premises and are concerned they will not be able to compete with the Wetherspoon chain, which has massive bulk buying power.

A spokesman for the company said this week: "We are still very keen to open a branch in Bexhill but we understand people in the town have concerns. We are happy to discuss their worries with them now or any time in the future.

"They also have the opportunity to make representations to the local authority through the planning process the same way we do.

"As far as other publicans are concerned, there is no evidence that the introduction of J.D. Wetherspoon premises in other towns has led to the demise of local pubs and that is not a planning consideration anyway."

He said anyone with concerns could write to The Legal Department, J.D. Wetherspoon, PO Box 616, Watford, Herts, WD24 4QU.
