War chest to fight incinerator gets another £10,000

MORE money has been added to the pot to fight the controversial Newhaven incinerator.

Lewes District Council has pledged 10,000 to help two campaign groups to fight the burner.

At a cabinet meeting councillors agreed to give the money to Dove 2000 Limited, the company formed by Defenders of the Ouse Valley and Estuary to take legal action, and Lewes district Friends of the Earth.

LDC said the money will only be paid to the solicitors acting for the organisations and will only be used if the organisations have to pay costs. Any money not spent for this specific purpose will be returned to the district council.

It was agreed the contribution would not exceed 10,000 in total and if it is needed will come from the planning appeals and inquiries budget.

This is the second boost for the challenge this month.

Newhaven Town Council agreed to spend more than 24,000 when they joined with the organisations in their legal battle at a meeting on February 5.

Again the money will only be spent if the case is lost.
