National waxes lyrical over Rye shop

A POETRY book outlet in Rye has been named as one of the top 50 bookshops in the country by the Independent – and it is not even a bookshop.

Classic Chaps, in Cinque Ports Street, is run by Chris Thompson as an outlet for men’s vintage clothing and is one of the first ports of call for photo and film shoots and theatre productions in the South East.

But poetry love Chris also offers an enviable selection of rare and sought after editions.

Writer Olivia Stock, commenting in the Independent magazine said: “All poets flinch at the idea of ending up in a second-hand bookshop, but perhaps not this one, where you will be among friends.

“Stock includes beautiful and rare editions going back to the 1870’s and 1880’s from Ted Hughes to Thom Gunn.

“You can browse amidst hats, coats and bowties.”

Chris commented: “I am delighted to be named as one of the best 50 bookshops in the country.”
