Birling Gap Road to be closed for seven days for emergency work

Birling Gap Road is set to be closed for a week after a water main burst last week.

The road was closed just before 6am today (Tuesday, April 4) and is due to reopen at the latest on Monday, May 10 at 11.59pm.

On social media Eastbourne Sightseeing said they are currently unable to run their open-top buses due to the road closure.

Regional leakage manager for South East Water Phil Jones said, “I’m really sorry for any disruption being caused by a burst five inch water main on Birling Gap Road East Dean.

“We have closed the road for the safety of pedestrians, motorists and our workforce while we carry out this emergency repair to the water main.

“Although our leakage team identified the burst on April 28, to avoid disruption to the busy surrounding roads over the bank holiday weekend, we delayed starting the repair until today (May 4).

“We anticipate the repair to be complete and the road reopened by Monday (May 10).
