Transport plans on show

PROPOSED transport improvements for Uckfield town centre are being exhibited by East Sussex County Council this week.

The proposals, which have been developed with the district and town councils, are designed to improve access and safety for all, particularly pedestrians, bus users and cyclists.

Improvements include more and better crossings, new bus stops, new opportunities for cyclists and improved traffic control by linking signals. This is the beginning of a five-year programme of improvements forming as part of the East Sussex Local Transport Plan.

Leaflets outlining the proposals have been distributed to local homes. During the exhibition at the Civic Centre which opened yesterday (Thursday) and continues today and tomorrow, county council officers and designers are giving details of the proposals and visitors are invited to ask questions and give comments.

County council Lead Member of Transport and Environment. Cllr Tony Reid. said: 'These proposals will help to ensure that Uckfield is a safer, healthier, more pleasant and vibrant place to live in, work in and visit.

'I would encourage as many people as possible who use the town to visit the exhibition. We are looking forward to listening to their views.'

The county council will be reporting on the outcome of the consultation in the spring and it is intended that construction could start later this year subject to funding.
