Traffic at a standstill

TRAFFIC in Bexhill was brought to a standstill this week as every main route in and out of town was clogged by roadworks.

Motorists were left fuming as temporary traffic lights on De La Warr Road, Hastings Road, Little Common Road and Lunsfords Cross combined to create gridlock at peak hours.

Highways authorities have been besieged with calls from road users asking why they allowed the works to go ahead at the same time.

The situation was at its worst on Tuesday and Wednesday when temporary lights in De La Warr Road caused three-mile tailbacks in both directions at rush hour.

The knock-on effect could be felt all over Bexhill as those who chose to take the rat-run shortcut through Hastings Road discovered more lights at the junction of Penland Road.

With more gas and water works in Knebworth Road and Dorset Road there was no escaping the problem this week.

The good news is it should all be coming to an end soon.

The lights at De La Warr Road were gone by Wednesday afternoon. The Highways Agency was reinstating a cable trench to the traffic island. A spokesman for contractor WS Atkins said the simple job took 24 hours because two layers of concrete were needed to fill the deep trench.
