TOWN TO LOSE 200 JOBS

A MAJOR company is to leave Lewes, resulting in the loss of more than 200 jobs in the town.

Roche Diagnostics in Bell Lane is to re-locate to purpose-built offices of 80,000 sq ft in Burgess Hill after 30 years in Lewes

The shock news came as a disappointment to MP Norman Baker and local business leaders who said they hoped the large building currently housing Roche's UK division could be re-let as soon as possible.

Roche, a world leader in diagnostics, the leading supplier of medicines for cancer and transplantation, and a market leader in virology, is to leave Lewes in the early summer of next year.

General manager Jan Van den Boer, said: 'We have been in our Lewes site for nearly 30 years and in many ways we will be sad to leave.

'However, we are pleased to be moving to a site which allows us to remain in Sussex. The new building will allow for the expansion of our business.'
