Tories win by-elections

THE Tories triumphed in both the Adur district and Sompting parish council by-elections on Thursday.

Conservative Sara Hall won by 368 votes '“ a majority of 155 '“ in the district council by-election for the vacant seat of Churchill ward, Lancing, following the resignation of Tory councillor Tony Strudwick last November.

The by-election attracted a turnout of just 18.8 per cent.

Meanwhile, Tory Nick Pigott was elected in the Sompting Parish Council by-election for the vacancy in Cokeham South ward after the resignation of Martin Horner.

Mr Pigott polled 116 votes, a majority of 16. That election attracted a 13.6 per cent turnout.

The full results were:- Churchill ward: Ann Bridges (Labour) 148 votes; Roy Gibson (Liberal Democrat) 213; Sara Hall (Conservative) 368 (elected).

Cokeham South: Joyce Burns (Lab) 100; Tracey Clarke (Lib Dem) 61; Nick Pigott (Con) 116 (elected)
