Supermarket bid makes councillor feel like its 'Groundhog Day'

A plan to build an Aldi supermarket has attracted fresh criticism from Lewes Town Council.

Just three weeks ago the council's planning committee dismissed an application to build a 15,000 sq ft store near Tesco in Brooks Road as a 'retail park by stealth'.

On Tuesday evening the planning committee criticised a revised application from the European supermarket chain and reaffirmed its opposition to the plan.

Cllr Ruth O'Keeffe said: 'This is seems like Groundhog Day, I can't see the difference between the last application.'

The latest proposal firms up Aldi's provision for office space on the site but the planning committee was still not happy with the application and again raised fears about the impact it would have on local traders.

The final decision on the application will be made by Lewes District Council.
