Star in the making

A LANCING songbird's musical career is set to take flight and it's all thanks to Miss Barbados.

Eva Turkoni, 18, from Leconfield Road, has co-written the song Star with her manager Iain Dunnett on the new CD by Stephanie Chase, who was crowned Miss Barbados 2001.

The CD, entitled Join the Party, has been launched to coincide with the 2002 Miss World Competition, which is now being held in Britain.

The CD's title track and Star were both featured on the Miss World preview television show, which was broadcast around the world on Monday.

"When I heard the first version she did, I was like OK," Eva said. "Then I heard the proper mix and it was quite poppy and it's great.

"It's really strange to here someone singing your song."

Stephanie actually recorded Star in London and at the Blue Wave Studios in Barbados, which is owned by the legendary Eddie Grant.

Eva has been writing songs since she was given singing lessons for her 14th birthday. She has now recorded a demo CD, produced by her and her manager, and said that other artists have recorded her songs, including one very big star who cannot be named!

She has a three octave range and said that many people have compared her music to that of the late American singer Eva Cassidy, who has enjoyed posthumous success in this country.

Her songs have been played both on Southern FM and Southern Counties Radio. Tracks from her demo CD can also be heard at www.dunnetwright.co.uk.

Join the Party is available at the Miss World website, www.missworld.org, or directly at www.mania.net
