Spanish crazy at Bexhill High

EVER wondered what the population of Estonia is? Or how to explain to a Spanish waiter there is a problem with your starter?

A language event held at Bexhill High last Wednesday offered the answers to all those problems and more besides.

The European Day of Languages event was set up to encourage the learning of foreign languages and explain their importance in our multi-national society.

Visitors could learn through a series of fun games and tasks.

Cafe Europe proved the most popular draw with traditional Spanish, French and German courses being offered. Customers were encouraged to order their meal in the appropriate language with the correct phrases to use printed on the menu.

Posters and displays created by students provided information on different countries.

Bexhill High teacher Sophie Ellis said: "It has gone really well. We are speaking different languages and people are speaking back.

"There has been quite a bit of interest in learning languages. We have had speed languages, which is a bit like speed dating, but you try a language for a short while and then move on.

"During the day we have spoken to quite a few students and staff with knowledge of other countries. We have had Estonian, Russian, Polish - even Arabic and some Dutch. It is quite a multi-cultural school."

Bradley Daymon, one of the students who helped to organise the event, said: "It is important that we should learn languages and see the importance of language. We all need to communicate with each other."
