SKATERS LOOK FOR AN UPGRADE

A GROUP of skateboarding Lewes youngsters want to improve conditions at the sports and skate park on Malling recreation ground.

They have formed a committee with Brad Levy of Lewes YMCA aimed at lobbying Lewes Town Council members for further improvements at the much-used area.

In a letter going out to council members, Clive Carling Read, Jason Windless, Ryan Isted, Sam Hunnisett, Sam Bates, Ollie Atherton, Dan Webb and James Netts said: 'We have come up with a number of ideas that we would like to see put in place, which we feel would improve the running and safety of the area.

'Among these ideas are safety issues such as the installation of CCTV, floodlights, park-safe wardens and a larger police presence.

'We are also concerned about the look of the space and would like to see a daily clean-up of litter and glass, more bins inside the park and a greater maintenance of the area.

'In addition, we want to make the space more user-friendly and would like to see a water fountain, a better shaded area to protect against extreme weather, a roof over the caged area and nearer family recreation area.'

The group say they are committed to making the space more community-friendly and want to arrange a meeting with councillors to talk further.

The group, which has yet to find itself a name, will also be present at a Lewes District Council fun day on September 9, running events and highlighting the work it has been doing for the last four weeks.
