Rye’s popular Country Market celebrates 40 years with cake

The popular weekly market, held in Rye Community Centre, marked the occasion by decking out the community centre in red, white and blue to reflect the fact that it was Diamond Jubilee Week and serving up coffee and home made cakes.

Market manager Jenny Stapley said: “Before cutting the anniversary cake, which had been made and beautifully iced by Shirley Gibson, Colonel Anthony Kimber gave a brief outline of the Market’s history.

“He then proposed a toast to both the Queen and Rye Country Market, and wished the market continued success in what is at present a very difficult economic climate.

“As a thank you for “doing the honours” Colonel Kimber was presented with a gift box containing a variety of home produced goodies.

“It was a most enjoyable and successful morning and everyone was given a piece of the anniversary cake to take home with them. “Rye Country Market is open Fridays March to December from 10am -1130 a.m. at the Community Centre Conduit Hill Rye.

“If you haven’t tried us yet, do come along as we would love to see you.

“Everything is home made, home grown and hand-crafted, from cakes, savouries, preserves, apple juice and free range eggs to plants, flowers, vegetables, cards and crafts.

The “Coffee and Cake for £1 events are taking place on a monthly basis, and also include a raffle for a box of Market goodies.”
