Rye Cllr speaks out on services

Cllr Souster spoke out at Monday’s Cabinet meeting in Bexhill and called for Bexhill to set up a council.

He said: “Devolution can go nowhere until Bexhill sorts itself out. It needs either a town council, an area committee or a community council before anything can realistically go ahead.

“The people of Bexhill have no representation at town level and that is quite wrong.”

Rother Council has been looking at devolving services for some time now.

They are trying to work with councils such as Rye to find a way for them to take over the running and maintenance of public conveniences.

Rother has already stated that it may have to withdraw from running public conveniences as more budget cuts take hold.

Other contracts which could be devolved include grounds maintenance, but the real sticking point in devolution is who controls car parks such as those at Rye and Camber, which generate thousands of pounds of revenue during the busy summer months.
