Rotary streets ahead

WORTHING Rotarians hit the town's streets at the weekend to raise thousands of pounds to help eradicate polio across the world.

Members of Worthing's three clubs, the Rotary Clubs of Worthing, West Worthing and Worthing Steyne, collected in different parts of the town and managed to raise more than 1,300 for the Rotary's worldwide polio eradication programme.

The programme was set up in the 1980s to wipe-out polio in the 110 countries affected and now there are only 10 left. The money raised is enough to immunise 4,000 children.

Chris Hatton, president of the Rotary Club of Worthing, said: "We are very pleased with how much we raised and would like to thank everyone who made a donation."

The three Rotary clubs in Worthing have all taken part in a variety of other activities. During the past year, the Rotary Club of Worthing has donated thousands of pounds to the Chanctonbury Community Play Scheme, Ashdown Centre for children with special needs, Worthing Salvation Army, St Barnabas' Hospice, Stray Cats youth drop-in centre, Wasps Disabled Sports Club and Worthing Hospital's Children's Centre.

It is also working towards providing 6,700 worth of equipment to a Methodist high school in Ghana and, together with Chichester and Storrington clubs, will provide homes for five refugee families in India.

The club, jointly with the West Worthing group, has also organised the August Bank Holiday Carnival and has donated money to help individuals.

Members of the Rotary Club of West Worthing organise the weekly recording of the Voice of Progress tapes for the blind. The club makes regular visits to Gifford House to play the residents at sports and recently ran a charity shop to raise money for the Chestnut Tree House children's hospice.

The club has also raised money to build and equip a medical clinic in the mountains of Nepal.

The Rotary Club of Worthing Steyne has supported the Stray Cats youth drop-in centre and run an annual Christmas party for old people in Lancing. It has provided kitchen equipment for the new Worthing Churches Homeless Hostel.

Members have also held a jazz concert at the Pier Pavilion the last two years.
