River Circle

RIVER CIRCLE, a 13ft high ring of stainless steel, has been chosen as the centrepiece of Littlehampton's new Town Square, following a competition for public art in the new East Bank development.

The large sculpture, together with a number of smaller art works elsewhere around the East Bank, made up John Thomson's winning entry in the 36,000 competition.

Arun District Council has now awarded Mr Thomson, a Portsmouth-based sculptor, the commission for the project.

Littlehampton's past and future, and its river and sea environment, will be among the themes reflected in his art works, including a bench near the lifeboat station.

He will laser cut, weld and polish the stainless steel, which will be given a special finish to protect it from the salty, riverside conditions, and will be designed so as not to "whistle" in the wind. All the pieces are expected to be in place by late summer.

The competition attracted entries from 83 artists, which were thinned down to a short list of five for an exhibition at Littlehampton Museum earlier this month, when the public had an opportunity to name their favourite work. Their 90-plus comments were considered by a selection committee of Arun, town, county council and other community representatives, who made the final choice.

Arun cabinet members approved the 36,000 funding for the commission and competition at their meeting on Monday night. A further 30,000 was earmarked for grants to improve the appearance of existing homes and business premises in the East Bank area. Bellway, Arun's development partner for East Bank, has contributed 10,000 towards the art works and grants.

Cabinet member Roger Elkins said: "It is very exciting and will add a focal point to the East Bank." He was, however, cautious about the use of stainless steel, which could tarnish in the harsh environment next to the river.

Council services director Colin Rogers said he would seek assurances that the materials used would be suitable.

The sculpture model of River Circle goes on display at Arun Civic Centre, Littlehampton from today (Thursday) until March 20.

Mr Thomson will also be taking workshops over the next few months to encourage community involvement in his commission.

"It is more than just the sculpture," said Mr Rogers. "It is about encouraging art in a wider context in the East Bank and Littlehampton."
